Back in the early ‘80s, when I graduated from Chiropractic school and received my license, I worked on every area of the body where a client was experiencing pain or discomfort. Often, that meant working on everything—which, I’m sure you can imagine, was exhausting both for the client and for me. As I learned to place priorities on which area warranted the most attention, I began noticing messages, like movies, passing through my head.
At first, I thought it was my imagination. However, the details and relativity of the messages appeared to be about what the clients were experiencing, both physically and psychologically.I continued to question why I was receiving the messages, what I was supposed to do with them, whether they were real or imagined, and, most importantly, whether they would be useful to the client. Eventually, I approached a client I believed wouldn’t judge me but would tell me the truth. I shared information I had received in my mind pertaining to her issues and asked if it was an accurate description of something she had experienced. Though surprised, she told me the description was accurate.
I enjoyed my work as a chiropractor, and was successful in helping clients feel better. However, I felt as if I wasn’t living up to my potential, and that felt wrong. I began looking for an alternate profession within which I could express my true nature. I earned a master’s degree in nutrition, and then I earned certifications as a life coach and a hypnotherapist. I practiced in these fields, yet what ultimately felt right to me was when I shared the messages I received for people, whether they were relative to the mind, body or soul.
One of the tools I developed from my experiences is the concept of Onefulness. Onefulness denotes familiarity with the knowledge that makes up our identity and represents not only who we are but how we connect and respond to life’s events.
This concept came to my mind after I saw clients change how they approached a problem using knowledge from their identity they had absorbed and developed themselves. Discovering insights about themselves, clients learned what needed to change in a problem and began making choices that supported that change. This is not how most people usually try to solve problems. People tend to rely on someone else to provide a solution, and then accept that way of thinking without experimenting with or figuring out their own perspective.
Now I found that those people who embraced Onefulness were able to think for themselves; filling in aspects of themselves that had been missing while also strengthening what they did know of themselves.
While working with clients and their issues, I also struggled working hard on my own personal growth and getting to know my own identity. After years of personal evolvement and listening to people tell me about their hopes, dreams, triumphs and defeats, I realized I had to write down their stories as well as my own so I could share my hard-earned insight into life and the human condition with others. It was important to let everyone know the underlying lesson I learned: that to grow and be whole, we have to learn about who we are, so we can discover and use the gifts each of us inherently possess.
This is how, my book, The Expressive Soul was born.
